I think it is difficult to represent any form of impressionism using two dimensional media; however, the photographs in this book are large, colorful, and detailed. It's the next best thing if you can't make it to a museum. My personal favorite Renoir is the portrait of Claude Monet. I cannot imagine how it would feel to see these two icons of impressionism together in their element. Monet is often cited as the father of 'diffused reflection', interpreting shadows as a reflection of color rather than representing them as a lack of color (i.e. black); however, I believe it was more of a collaboration between Renoir and Monet. This is only my opinion, but I feel Renoir is the king of impressionistic portraits. 'Girl with a Watering Can' and 'Girl with Hoop' are iconic examples of portraits using diffused reflection. Amazing. This is a must have for any fan of impressionism.
